Go ASAP to Cafe Lavande!

If you want to feel like you've stepped back in time and gone to romantic Paris for an evening, head to Cafe Lavande in LaJolla, CA. Pronto! Hubby Steve and I had dinner there last night (again) and I can't say enough good about this lovely little restaurant. It's located on beautiful Girard Avenue in a "bistro-like" courtyard space with both indoor and outdoor seating. A lovely fountain, quaint decor, soft music, sweet waiters with impeccable manners who give you attentive service with a smile (remember those days?!), and great food at great prices describe Cafe Lavande to a T. The owner even remembers us when we come there and shakes our hand. How dear.

Bon Appetite!

Kiss the Cook

After forgetting to plug in the crock pot two nights ago so our chicken was COLD, I decided to tap into my inner Betty Crocker and make my hubby an even nicer dinner last night and he was thrilled. Out came the (okay so they're silk!) flowers, candles, and into the crock pot went pork chops, potatoes, carrots, and squash. Yum! I love crock pot cooking because with one or two pots and the flick of a switch you can have a whole nutritious and attractive meal. What could be easier for today's busy working couples?

Bon Appetit!

From Master Bedroom Mess to LOVE NEST!

Is your master bedroom a big mess or a LOVE NEST?! Banish the blahs and cut the clutter to transform it into a nurturing retreat for you and your mate with my latest article/tips:

Master Bedroom Mess or LOVE NEST? 11 Ways to Transform Your Master Bedroom Into a Nurturing Retreat For Two*

by Kathryn Bechen

With increasing responsibilities and stressors on couples these days, I’m a firm believer that a restful and serene master bedroom can take the edge off a long hard day and be a nurturing and loving retreat for two.

Here’s how to have fun transforming your bedroom mess into your special LOVE NEST, working on it together so it meets both of your needs:

1. Signature Style. Develop a signature decorating style that reflects both of your tastes. Seaside serenity? Knotty pine nature? Fresh moderne? My hubby and I decorate our bedroom and home together like an “indoor garden/cozy cottage” because it reminds us of outdoor garden tours we attend together and of our bed and breakfast inn travels. That wouldn’t please every couple but it’s our signature decorating style as a couple.

2. Clutter Cutter. Nothing kills romantic inclinations faster than stacked-up boxes, piles of books and magazines, and kids’ toys strewn all over. Cut the clutter by removing anything that doesn’t foster a sense of calm and serenity. Donate it to charity.

3. Clean Freak. Now that you’ve removed the clutter, time to get out that dust rag, vacuum cleaner, and mop. Make it shine ‘til it sparkles! One of you vacuums, the other dusts, and soon you’re on your way to blooming romance.

4. Blooming Romance. Speaking of blooming romance, flowers always perk up a room with color and ambiance. If your budget doesn’t allow for real flowers every week, buy some nice silk ones at your local craft or discount store and make a lovely arrangement.

5. The Color of Romance. Choose colors for your bedroom that you both love. Remember compromise and love are key! Not fond of pink and pale green or hunter green and red? How about dark raspberry and slate gray or a seaside theme with soft blues and sand tones? Painting your walls is the least expensive way to transform a room with color.

6. Bed Bliss. Choose a bed that’s comfortable for both of you. With the wide array of mattresses and headboards available today, you’re sure to find one that pleases you both. Beds are especially important in a marriage because it’s where we love, dream, snuggle, read, talk, watch movies, heal when we’re sick, and have breakfast on a tray. Consider your bed a symbol of your sacred love for each other.

7. Sumptuous Linens. High thread count sheets, a cozy down comforter, and a colorful mohair throw turns your bed into a sumptuous and sensuous nest. Sweet dreams!

8. Lovely Lighting. My hubby Steve installed a dimmer switch on our master bedroom light for immediate ambiance. Choose bedside lamps in a style you both like. And of course, can you ever have too many flickering candles to court romance?

9. Soothing Sounds. Play your favorite relaxing music or buy a fountain for a soothing sound that will ease you into sweet romance and slumber. Decide whether or not having a TV in your bedroom fits your lifestyle. We have a TV in our bedroom so we can snuggle up and watch movies together in bed.

10. Lovely Art. Choose art you both love. If you’re on a tight budget, peruse the internet for quality posters and frame them or buy inexpensive original art at local art festivals.

11. Breakfast In Bed. Don’t save up the luxury of breakfast in bed for Valentine’s Day only! Buy some attractive trays and take turns making and bringing each other breakfast in bed. Bon Appetit!

Indeed, with a little ingenuity, a few dollars, and some loving teamwork, you can turn your master bedroom mess into a relaxing LOVE NEST for two!

I'm In the Decorating News!

My hubby and I like cozy "indoor garden/cottage style" and have decorated our bedroom together to feel like a bed and breakfast inn.

I was interviewed recently by AP news reporter/writer Melissa Rayworth about the topic of "Decorating Without Divorcing." (TM) I am pleased to let you know that her story came out today at ABC News and MSNBC TODAY Home & Garden, along with several other online newspapers across the country. I hope you enjoy my tips, and those of others, including HGTV's David Bromstad.

Do you have a signature decorating style as a couple?

Happy Decorating & Organizing!

Pink Tulips Chase Away the Winter Blahs

We're having a big winter storm in SoCal--heavy winds, rains, and the palm trees due to sway all this week. Alas, it's time for us SoCal-ites to head to the grocery store for some pink tulips to chase away the winter blahs....

I thought these "California grown" pink tulips were so pretty that I left them in my kitchen sink for awhile so I could enjoy their fresh unpretentious beauty. That's a lot of loveliness for about $7.62 don't you think?!

I find the way they open up for you like they are "smiling" so endearing. Don't you?!

Happy pink tulips!

Decorating Without Divorcing (TM)

Photo is of Kathryn and Steve Bechen's living room and balcony which they
organized and decorated together. Click to enlarge.

Are you and your mate in agreement over how to decorate your home? Have you successfully "married" your tastes? Are you organizational opposites? I wrote a poem, "Decorating Without Divorcing" back in 2005, and since I'll be teaching a decorating seminar in February for couples, I thought I'd publish my poem on my blog once again:

Decorating Without Divorcing

The couple's home was a nightmare
with junk everywhere.
Said she, "I can't even sit on my chair!"
"But it's my project for work," said he with a grin.
"If I move it to my Lazy Boy, I won't even fit in!"
"Your Elk head us so ugly,"
said she with dismay.
"Please hang it in the garage
so I don't have to see it every day!"
"Well your pantyhose are hanging
in the bathroom and they drip,"
said he with a big pout of his lip.
"I know--let's redecorate!"
she exclaimed with a smile.
He replied, "Well that's an idea
that we can't afford for quite awhile!"
"But those purple walls are just hideous,"
she said, putting her hands on her hips.
"Well, I like the purple with the red trim,"
he replied with vigor--didn't matter to him!
She pondered awhile because
she knew of course,
that if she could only convince him,
it would be cheaper than a divorce!
Suddenly out of nowhere
they both heard a loud voice.
"It's God," it boomed,
"Now you two have a choice!"
"Now listen up; just listen to me--
if you work together on this,
you'll both be happy--you'll see!"
So they listened and heard
what God told them to do.
And then they knew their home
could be lovely, for two!
"Let's figure out what's important to each,"
she said, "And how we can decorate
within our financial reach."
"I can handle that!"
said he and gave her a hug.
"Okay honey, you can buy that rug!"
"Oh darling, you're a dear!"
she exclaimed with a kiss.
"Why we're again on our way
To sublime wedded bliss!"

Travel As Colorful Decorating Inspiration

"A fundamental truth: man needs color.
Color is the immediate, spontaneous expression of life. "
-- Le Corbusier

I have just returned from my travels with my hubby to the desert area of Palm Springs, CA. I personally find that traveling helps me "court my decorating and color muse." When we dine at a new restaurant, for instance, I consciously take notice of the decor, table place settings, artwork, and colors and make a mental note to myself about how I might be able to incorporate those ideas at home. And what better way to choose a color you love for your latest home decorating project than to look to nature while you're traveling? I took the photo above at a golf course in the desert. The vibrant peachy-pink of the sky reminds me of a living room we once had that we painted "Acapulco Sun" by Sherwin Williams paint. At the time, we lived in the cold Midwest and it was our way of uplifting our mood and bringing warmth to our lives through color at home. To that end, I hope you enjoy the article I've written: "How Color Affects Mood in Your Home."

Have a colorful and happy January!

Kathryn :)
